Dr. Penny Kris-Etherton named NELA President

Penny Kris-Etherton, PhD, RD was elected to serve as president of the Northeast Lipid Association (NELA) at the group's 4th Annual Scientific Forum held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 22-24, 2008. Dr.Kris-Etherton is a Full Professor at Pennsylvania State University, where she also holds the title of Distinguished Professor of Nutrition. Dr.Kris-Etherton received a bachelor of science degree in Medical Dietetics with honors from the Rochester Institute of Technology and her master's degree. in Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University. She completed her dietetic internship at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Kris-Etherton was awarded a PhD in Human Nutrition from the University of Minnesota and she was a Katherine McCormick Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Stanford University in lipid metabolism the Division of Gastroenterology.
The focus of Dr. Kris-Etherton's research program is on exploring how nutrients and other bioactive constituents affect established and emerging risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Dr. Kris-Etherton also has actively explored the health effects of fatty acids with emphasis on stearic acid, monounsaturated fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids. Throughout her career she has played a role in the widespread communication of nutrition messages to health professionals, government representatives, consumers and the media. In addition, she has been an active participant in developing nutrition policy in the United States. Because of her regular contributions as an NLA board member, we anticipate that her term as NELA President will be effective and productive for the organization.
