Fall 2012 Clinical Lipid Update
September 14 - 16, 2012
Hosted by NELA and SELA
Charlotte Westin
Charlotte, NC
Message from the President of the Northeast Lipid Association
I am pleased to welcome you to the online home of the Northeast Lipid Association (NELA) and I am honored to
be your President.
A little about our chapter: we are the third largest with 578 members, which is 21% of the total NLA membership.
In addition, our members are tied with the highest percentage of total private donations to the Foundation of
the National Lipid Association. In addition, we reside in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.
The past year was very active for our chapter. Last August we jointly hosted the Summer Clinical Lipid
Update with the Southeast Regional Chapter. This meeting, held in Washington, D.C., was well attended and
featured the latest science for the Evaluation and Treatment of the Intermediate Risk CHD Patient.
Building on the success of this meeting, NELA hosted the 2011 NLA Annual Scientific Sessions in May
in New York City. This outstanding session was the largest NLA meeting to date, with nearly 700
attendees from more than 15 countries.
In addition to the educational sessions offered by NELA, in March we sponsored the first ever patient meeting.
This meeting functioned as a focus group for the NLA's public awareness campaign, "FH: It's Relative - Know
Your Family Cholesterol History" on familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). Patients from around the region shared
stories, provided input on the campaign, and interacted with lipidologists. The input received served as
the basis for the patient materials. The campaign was a huge success with more than 1,700 unique website
visits to www.learnyourlipids.com and coverage in over 250 media outlets!
During the coming year, I would like to continue to build on this success by endorsing the theme "Personalizing
Prevention: Lipids and Atherosclerosis Risk," first announced at the NLA Annual Sessions in NYC in May.
Personalizing care should be at the forefront of our patient interactions, as no two patients are ever
alike. I encourage you to submit your research on this topic to the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. Let's
continue to discuss ways to best incorporate this theme into our practices and lessons.
In closing, I hope you to see you all at the next NELA sponsored event: the Fall Clinical Lipid Update,
September 14-16, 2012. This meeting will be held at the Charlotte Westin in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Make plans now to attend. Additional details will be posted here on www.lipid.org, as available. Check
back often for up-to-date information.
I look forward to working with you in the coming year. Feel free to contact me or any of the NELA Executive
Committee if you have any comments of suggestions.
