Eliot A. Brinton, MD, was elected to serve as the President of the Pacific Lipid Association at the National Lipid Association's 2008 Annual Scientific Sessions held in Seattle, Washington May 29-June 1, 2008. Dr. Brinton is an Associate Professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine, and Director of the Metabolism Section, Cardiovascular Genetics, at the same institution. His broad background in metabolism and endocrinology studies are strong considerations in his nomination, as are his many activities undertaken on behalf of the National Lipid Association and its chapter, the Pacific Lipid Association. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for both organizations, which bring together clinical lipidologists who work to reduce mortality and morbidity caused by cholesterol metabolism disorders.

Dr. Brinton was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1952. He attended Stanford University from 1970-71, and he received his BS in Medical Biology and his MD degree from the University of Utah in 1974 and 1978, respectively. As a postgraduate, he interned at Duke University, and completed his residency there in 1980. He then began to narrow his field of interest and was appointed a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Washington in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition. Since 1984, Dr. Brinton has held a number of appointments, including Assistant Professor of Biochemical Genetics and Metabolism at The Rockefeller University in New York (1984-1991), Associate Adjunct Professor at Wake Forest University (1991-96), where he was also Director of the Clinical Lipid Center, and Adjunct Professor at Arizona State University (1998-2003). Dr. Brinton has earned numerous awards, including the National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH, 1981), the Clinical Investigator Award from NIH in 1987, and the American Heart Association National Grant-in-Aid in 1996. Dr. Brinton has been a member and fellow of many organizations, was President of the New York Lipid Research Club in 1988, is a Founding Member of the National Lipid Association, and is also a Founding Member of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology.

In addition to having published and contributed to many peer-reviewed articles, Dr. Brinton is a sought-after reviewer himself. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, is an editor for Lipids Online, and is peer reviewer for such publications as Atherosclerosis, Diabetes Care, and the Journal of Lipid Research.
