Blumenthal Elected President of Southeast Lipid AssociationThe Southeast Lipid Association (SELA) is pleased to announce the election of Roger S. Blumenthal, MD, as President of the Association. Dr. Blumenthal is Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Blumenthal graduated with honors from the Johns Hopkins University and received his Medical Degree from Cornell University Medical College. Subsequently, he did an Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins. His principal research interests involve the optimal treatment of ischemic heart disease and the development of strategies to optimize management of cardiovascular disease risk factors. He specializes in treating adults, who are at higher risk for future cardiovascular events either because of a history of prior cardiovascular or peripheral arterial disease or the presence of multiple cardiac risk factors (e.g., hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, cigarette smoking, sedentary lifestyle, overweight status, or a family history of premature cardiovascular disease.) Dr. Blumenthal was the principal developer of the Johns Hopkins Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease, and he is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Preventive Cardiology program. He has written numerous articles, book chapters and editorials dealing with many aspects of coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis management.
Dr. Blumenthal is on the Editorial Board of Cardiology Review, Today in Cardiology, Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing and The Journal of Women's Health. He regularly reviews manuscripts submitted to Circulation, The American Journal of Cardiology, The Journal of the American College of Cardiology and The American Heart Journal. Dr. Blumenthal is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the American Heart Association Council on Epidemiology and Prevention. He is a member of the National Lipid Education Council and is on the steering committee of the Emerging Science of Lipid Management CME program. Currently he is on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association's Baltimore Division and is an official national AHA spokesperson. The Southeast Lipid Association is a regional branch of The National Lipid Association (NLA). The NLA is a multidisciplinary organization that represents more than 1,000 physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, dieticians and their practices. It was created in 2002 to serve the community of lipid professionals who manage patients with lipid disorders and increased cardiovascular risk. Ultimately, the primary goal of the NLA is to formalize the specialty of "Lipidology" and the management of patients with lipid disorders as a national priority in medicine.
