Scenes from SELA's 10th Scientific Forum

Although the NLA is a relatively new organization, it actually has its roots in the Southeast Lipid Association, which formed and held its inaugural meeting 10 years ago. Many of those present at that first gathering in 1997 were in attendance at the 10th Scientific Forum held August 3-5, 2007 in Savannah, Georgia. Attendees arrived at the Westin Savannah Harbor, a beautiful venue on the riverfront.

The Forum opened with Dr John Guyton, a founding father of SELA, giving the keynote address on the subject of CVD prevention and role of lipidology.

Among the many presentations that covered the breadth and scope of our field, Marian Limacher, MD, spoke on the subject of CHD in Women.

As our organization remains largely focused on reducing morbidity and mortality from dyslipidemias, we tend to focus on CVD and diabetes and so we were pleased to have Suber Huang, MD, give a talk on the role of lipids in Vitreoretinal Disease.

As always, we thank our supporters and industry partners who helped to make this event a milestone in NLA history.

Friday's Forum drew to a close with Gregory Cohn, MD, presenting a lecture on the topic of Metabolic Syndrome and Hypergonadism.

Saturday featured an exceptionally strong lineup of the NLA's top speakers, including Robin Crouse, MD, Peter Toth, MD, PhD, and Ronald Goldberg, MD. Here's Peter Wilson, MD, during his talk on the subject of Characterizing Dyslipidemia.

Later in the afternoon, Michael Moore, MD, gave a challenging lecture on the topic of Renin-Angiotensin System Antagonists as Initial Therapy.

Saturday's Forum drew to a close with popular workshops offering practical information for clinicians, a look at Metabolic Syndrome management tools, patient compliance strategies and the always-popular Ralph La Forge, MSc held a session on exercise strategies.

The highlight of every Scientific Forum is, of course, the President's Reception and Dinner. To commemorate SELA's 10th anniversary, we held this function in Savannah's historic district at The Mansion on Forsythe. As guests arrived, they could see the SELA logo projected on the fountain.

Also, a gospel choir was on hand to greet and welcome the arriving members and guests. Whenever you attend an NLA-sponsored event, expect to be amazed.

Earlier in the day, The Mansion on Forsythe played host to a special Spouse/Guest Program-a Heart Healthy Cooking Class. Participants received hands-on professional training from the Mansion's award-winning chefs, and brushed up on techniques for adding flavor without adding unwanted calories. As a commemorative gift, everyone received a SELA apron.

The President's Dinner always features the changing of the guard as the current president passes the gavel to the president-elect. In this case, Dr. Dean Bramlet-one of the stars of the NLA Challenge at Scottsdale this year-took over from Dr. Daniel Wise, who concluded a successful term. Among his accomplishments, Dr Wise chaired a symposium at COSEHC on the subject of Lipids and the Management of CV Risk Reduction, and established outreach liaison with this key Hypertension organization-fulfilling a strategic goal for the NLA. Here, Dr. Bramlet presents Dr Wise with an award recognizing his achievements.

At the President's Dance, attendees took to the floor as The 8-Tracks played non-stop dance classics. We caught Dr. John Guyton and Dr. Anne Goldberg, president of the NLA, sharing a moment of fun.

See you next year!
