Message from the President of the Southwest Lipid Association:

Let me start be saying that I am honored to lead the Southwest regional chapter for the next year. The regional chapters provide a great opportunity to get involved with NLA while getting to know your local colleagues and promoting the spread of lipidology.

With 340 members the Southwest is the smallest NLA regional chapters. Our members come from the states of Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming. Let's reach 400 members by the 2012 Annual Sessions, which we are co-sponsoring. Talk to your colleagues about NLA and the many benefits of being a member. Don't forget to include nurse practitioners and physician assistants and any other members of the healthcare team who have an interest in lipids. Ask your colleagues to join with us today.

During the coming year we will continue to build upon the strong foundation established by immediate past-president Kittie Wyne, MD, PhD, FNLA. SWLA will continue to focus on two main initiatives: 1) developing educational programs for providers and the general population throughout the region; and 2) expanding the breadth of the chapter, focusing on pediatrics and mid-level providers.

We are excited about the coming year and we are off to a great start. On May 21, the Colorado Chapter of the ACC held a newly created annual meeting organized by Dr. Thomas Haffey on the topic of stroke prevention. Over 100 attendees were lucky enough to hear national ACC leaders including John Harold MD-ACC-Vice-President; Gerrie Gardner, DO- ACC Governor of Wyoming Chapter; and Kris Vijay, MD- ACC Governor AZ and NLA Secretary of SWLA. Our region is very fortunate to have SWLA Board Member Thomas Haffey, DO, and Colorado ACC Governor, represent our interests on a national and regional level.

We invite you to attend the 2012 NLA Annual Scientific Sessions in our own Scottsdale, Arizona. SWLA will be co-sponsoring the sessions with the NLA from May 31 - June 3 at the J.W. Marriott in Scottsdale. You will not want to miss out on the latest in lipid research and applications. The program committee is already planning a cutting-edge program. At the same time the Foundation of the NLA has several exciting and unique special fundraisers in development. Additional information will be posted on www.lipid.org as it becomes available.

Again, I look forward to the coming year, but we need your help to make it the best ever for SWLA. IF you have any questions or comments do not hesitate to contact me.
