The Emergent Science of HDL and its Metabolism: Mechanistic Understanding of CETP Antagonism and Beyond (Register on site)

May 31, 2012
7:30-9:30 pm
Location: Arizona Ballroom A-G

The Emergent Science of HDL and its Metabolism: Mechanistic Understanding of CETP Antagonism and Beyond is scheduled for Thursday, May 31st from 7:30-9:30 pm features Program Chair Dr. Peter Toth along with faculty members, Drs. Bryan Brewer and Robert Rosenson. The program will provide a mechanistic understanding of CETP antagonism. Participants will gain a more sophisticated understanding of the science of lipoprotein metabolism, and a stronger grasp on the complicated mechanisms by which HDL particle number and functionality can be bolstered to enhance the anti-atherogenic properties of HDL and reduce CVD risk.

Chair: Peter P. Toth, MD, PhD, FNLA
Faculty:
H. Bryan Brewer, Jr. MD
Robert S. Rosenson, MD, FNLA

Special Session on Improving Outcomes in Patients with Severe Familial Hypercholesterolemia

June 1, 2012
4:00-5:30PM
Location: Arizona Ballroom A-G

The NLA Special Session on Improving Outcomes in Patients with Severe Familial Hypercholesterolemia will address current knowledge, practice gaps and challenges in the identification and management of patients with severe familial hypercholesterolemia. Dr. Mary McGowan will lead a panel of nationally-renowned lipidologists through the pathophysiology, early detection of and therapeutic options for treating patients with FH. Attendees will also hear a patient's perspective as the session will conclude with an interactive presentation from Wenter Blair, a young woman who was diagnosed with FH.

Chair: Mary P. McGowan, MD, FNLA
Faculty:
Daniel J. Rader, MD, FNLA
James A. Underberg, MD, FNLA
Wenter Blair

Reducing CVD Risk in the Patient with High Triglycerides and Metabolic Syndrome or DM-2: You Be the Judge™

June 1, 2012
7:00-9:30PM
Arizona Ballroom A-G

This innovative educational activity is designed to maximize interaction between faculty and participants, while focusing on relevant issues and challenges in the management of patients with hypertriglyceridemia (HTG). The renowned faculty of experts in dyslipidemia will present their perspectives on contemporary clinical topics and cases, and allow attendees to judge which perspective is most sound/persuasive. Key clinical data, guideline recommendations, and the most up-to-date evidence associated with CVD risk in the setting of HTG will be the focus of this not-to-be-missed program. Topics and relevant case studies will be presented and discussed. They include:

  • Relationship of HTG and low HDL-C to increased CVD risk
  • Tests required/desired to define CVD risk in the HTG patient
  • Optimal lipid management in the patient with HTG and either Metabolic Syndrome or Diabetes Mellitus-2
  • Therapies in development for management of HTG and how they might change our clinical approach for difficult-to-treat HTG patients

Chair:
Eliot A. Brinton, MD

Faculty:
Harold E. Bays, MD
W. Virgil Brown, MD
Terry A. Jacobson, MD
