Vitamin D and statin myopathy
Feb 7, 2010 3 comments Uncategorized Uncategorized

There is a lot of anecdotal buzz in lipiology circles that Vitamin D is a cure all for statin-associated myopathy. Well we finally have data from a clinical trial looking at this controversy.  Low serum 25 (OH) vitamin D levels (<32 ng/mL) are associated with reversible myositis-myalgia in statin-treated patients. Ahmed W, et al. Translational Research 2009;153:11–16.

Tom, I dont have the article handy , but the 92% symptom resolution seems high. here in Bmore, ~80% of people are deficicnet in vitmain D. Many, but certainly not 92% who have statin myalgias , get symptom improvement. What was the final level of vitamin D (25 hydorxy i assume)achieved in those with symptom resolution was the average dose of vitamin D3 used ?

Tom, we are a referal lipid clinic and see every patient in town that complains of statin myalgias. When the Vit D discussion came out in JACC by the mid-America group (JACC 2008;52:1949) we went back and measured everyone's Vit D. After replacing their vit D to levels >30 ng/ml, we then rechallanged them with low dose statins (i.e. MWF dosing), and the only ones that seemed to show a reduction in the incidence of statin myalgias were those with very low levels of Vit D, in general < 16 ng/ml.
