Lipidaholics: Please go over to the Groups page and click on lipidaholics group to read the latest case discussion which gets into the importance of HDL particle size as both a risk factor and goal of therapy. Most of all please post any comments. I believe there is a lot of misinformation out there on HDL sizes, especially by labs offering such tests - what they mean and what to do about them.

Are you 100% sure you understand the exact definition of what is isolated low HDL-C? Many really do not know the exact definition. Go over to the Group pages and check out Lipidaholics Anonymous Case # 263 which presents a patient's profile and you have to decide - is it or is it not isolated low HDL-C.

The article is a prepublication in the Journal Menopause
Fascinating data from SWAN discusses HDL-C and atherosclerosis in menopausal women. Supporting 2007 data from The Los Angeles Atherosclerosis Study, it seems the protective effect of HDL may be diminished as women transition in menopause. My conclusion (and please read the entire BioCritique analysis) is that all of the "carved in stone" statements about high HDL-C necessarily being cardioprotective or that raising HDL-C per se with various modalities is always beneficial must be dismissed.
