I am an RN and going to be working in a small hospital pharmacy based out patient Lipid Clinic.  Those of you who have Lipid Clinics, do you have a collaborative agreement with referring providers in order to order appropriate laboratory tests, authorize appropriate refills and adjsut lipid lowering therapies or dosing based upon lab values and patient assessment?

Is this agreement in form of policies, protocols, approved algorithms?

Thank you so much for your help

You need to initiate a dialogue with Carol Mason in Tampa Florida. She is a wealth of info.

HI Deb, thank you for asking your question and using the NLA blog site.  I am sorry it has taken me a bit of time to get back to you.  If you have other questions or issues and want to talk or email directly please let me know.  I am not sure what you mean exactly about "collaborative agreement" with referring providers but in most cases when you are seeing patients that are referred to your lipid clinic you should feel free to order whatever tests you feel are appropriate.  If you need to better understand the specialized lipoprotein testing and how to bill for those services I would ask the "reps" to visit your clinic and talk to you about it.  Please let me know if you have anything specific; I would be happy to talk further about the "nurse"/"physician" role if that is what you are asking?

Best regards,

Carol M. Mason, ARNP, CLS, FAHA, FNLA
