Letter from the NLA President: A Productive Few Months

Greetings, NLA members, I hope all is well.

The NLA has had a productive few months! Notable developments include the new, terrific edition of LipidSpin landing in your mailbox, the Pentathlon Challenge coming to a close, and the Annual Scientific Sessions in early June.

Organized by my former home chapter (Midwest Lipid Association) and its President, Noreen Nazir, MD, this edition of LipidSpin focuses on NLA’s Impact on the Health Community. As Lipid Specialists, we provide a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to assist patients directly, and to collaborate with other members of the healthcare team to help optimize cardiovascular risk reduction. This edition highlights the achievements of the NLA thus far and debuts new concepts that will further advance the field.

I hope everyone has enjoyed participating in the NLA’s Pentathlon Challenge, an online educational competition where chapters and members are competing for lipid glory! As I write this in late May, I look forward to crowning the victors at the 2023 Annual Scientific Sessions in Atlanta, Georgia, June 1-4. There are many exciting sessions and events planned during the meeting, including several educational symposia and expert theaters, an arcade game night benefiting the NLA Foundation, and social events open to all attendees! If you have not yet registered, you can do so at lipid.org/sessions.

The scientific statements committee has been hard at work, and I am proud to say that we have produced two new statements and perspectives since February of 2023, and have one more in the works:

  1. The Importance of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Measurement and Control as Performance Measures: A Joint Clinical Perspective from the National Lipid Association and the American Society for Preventive Cardiology
  2. Nutrition Interventions for the Management of Dyslipidemia in Adults: A Clinical Perspective (endorsed by the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association)
  3. Upcoming - Statin Therapy for Primary Prevention in Older Adults: A joint Clinical Perspective from the National Lipid Association and the American Geriatric Society

These statements will be published on the Journal of Clinical Lipidology website (lipidjournal.com) and will be presented during the Annual Scientific Sessions. It has been an honor to serve as the 2022-2023 National Lipid Association president, and I know the association is in good hands with my successor, Daniel E. Soffer, MD, FNLA, to whom I will be passing the baton to during the Atlanta meeting. I hope to see you all there!
