Foundation Update

The Foundation of the National Lipid Association continues to work on increasing its visibility as well as efforts to increase awareness of lipid disorders and management. We are continuing to work in the area of underdiagnosed and undertreated lipid disorders.

We have also continued our popular fundraising events. In September, the Foundation hosted “Cooking with the Foundation” at the Fall Clinical Lipid Update in Pittsburgh. This fun and interactive cooking event took place at Pittsburgh’s Crate Cooking School and featured an interactive cooking demonstration by a seasoned chef. More than 35 NLA members attended the event, learned how to prepare a healthy and delicious dinner, and were able to relax and enjoy their finished meal with colleagues and friends.

Also in September, the Foundation played a valuable role in National Cholesterol Education Month. With the assistance of the NLA Communications Team and the Nutrition Workgroup, the Foundation helped increase awareness of the importance of cholesterol management through outreach campaigns focused on nutrition and an active lifestyle. This included a month-long social media campaign offering healthy tips, recipes, and motivational guidance for every day of the week. In addition, the NLA hosted a Twitter chat on Sept. 23 to help generate robust discussion surrounding diet and exercise and the effect on cholesterol and heart-health. Overall, the campaign was very well-received and helped grow the NLA’s and Foundation’s brand and presence on social media.

The Foundation will also be taking part again in #GivingTuesday, which will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 1. This global event is aimed at giving back. #GivingTuesday is a movement created to celebrate generosity and giving on the Tuesday following Cyber Monday and Black Friday. We ask that you consider participating in this global day dedicated to giving back by donating to the Foundation of the National Lipid Association (FNLA). Your donation allows the FNLA to support patient and community outreach activities, develop patient education materials, and collaborate with the NLA on its initiatives to reduce CVD events and deaths related to abnormalities of cholesterol metabolism. Donate online or add your end-of-year contribution when paying your 2015 NLA dues!

Finally, the Foundation of the NLA is happy to announce the second year of the Foundation of the National Lipid Association Hunninghake FH Abstract Award for the best submitted abstract in the area of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) research. The winner will be determined by the Foundation’s Board of Directors, and the prize will be $1,500 with an additional $1,000 travel grant to cover the winner’s travel expenses to the meeting. The winner will present the abstract live at the abstract session during the NLA’s 2016 Scientific Sessions.

As always, thank you for your continued support of the Foundation!
