Midwest Member Dr. Patrick McBride Honored with 2015 NLA Distinguished Achievement Award
Dr. Patrick McBride, Associate Dean for Students at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, was recently honored with the Distinguished Achievement Award at the National Lipid Association’s 2015 Annual Sessions. The annual award is the highest honor conferred by the National Lipid Association (NLA), and candidates must be widely known for a major contribution to clinical lipidology (research, teaching, publishing or service), whether as a single accomplishment or through lengthy career work.“Dr. Pat Mcbride was selected to receive the highest NLA award this year because of his major contributions to clinical lipidology. His career has spanned more than 20 years as a recognized excellent teacher, educator, and researcher by his students and peers.” Said Dr. James Falko, Chairman of the Honor and Awards Committee, “His major achievement is his development of one of the first comprehensive clinical preventive cardiology programs that has been acknowledged locally, as well as nationally.”
Dr. McBride is currently a professor in the Department of Medicine’s section of cardiovascular medicine and the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He also co-directs the UW Hospital and Clinics’ Preventive Cardiology program, with more than 30 professional staff and includes inpatient and outpatient cardiac rehabilitation, a preventive cardiology/cholesterol clinic and other clinical initiatives for people at risk for cardiovascular disease. In 2004, he became Associate Dean for Students at UW SMPH.
Dr. McBride’s experience encompasses the three broad areas of academic medicine: education, research and clinical care. He received his medical degree from University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UW SMPH) and Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of South Carolina, where he also completed a family practice residency. He has served on several national guideline panels including the National Cholesterol Education Program’s (NCEP) Children and Adolescent Treatment Panel, the AAMC Obesity Panel, the AHRQ Cardiac Rehabilitation Expert Panel and the NIH-NCEP’s Adult Treatment Panel III and IV. Dr. McBride has been honored with 12 local and national teaching awards, including a Distinguished Physician Alumni Award from the USC School of Medicine, a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the UW-Milwaukee and a Distinguished Education Award from the University of Wisconsin. He received a lifetime position at the University of Wisconsin Teaching Academy.
With his primary research focus in preventive cardiology, cholesterol treatment and the quality of cardiovascular disease prevention in practice, Dr. McBride has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications. Dr. McBride is a leader in developing and implementing statewide teaching programs for health care professionals on heart disease prevention, cholesterol and quality.
