The National Lipid Association Announces New York Lipidologist as President-Elect
James A. Underberg, MD, Elected by NLA Members during the 2016 NLA Scientific Sessions in New Orleans
The National Lipid Association (NLA) announces the appointment of James A. Underberg, MD, MS, FACPM, FACP, FASPC, FNLA, as president-elect. NLA members voted on the slate of new nominees during the annual business meeting in New Orleans on May 21, 2016.
“I’m excited to serve as president-elect of the NLA, along with Joyce Ross, CRNP, MSN, who was just appointed president of the NLA,” said Dr. Underberg. “It is an exciting time for the NLA, and I look forward to seeing the organization grow and expand both in membership and influence regarding policy and guidelines. Our ongoing commitment to educating and updating our membership continues to be a prime interest of mine.”
Dr. Underberg is a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine. He is also the director of the Bellevue Hospital Lipid Clinic and a member of the Center of Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at NYU. His clinical focus is preventive cardiovascular medicine, where he specializes in the management of patients with lipids and lipoprotein disorders, hypertension management, and cardiovascular disease prevention. He graduated from Yale University with a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree, and completed his doctorate degree at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His internship and residency were completed at Bellevue Hospital Medical Center.
As president-elect, Dr. Underberg will continue in his role as scientific meeting co-planner for the NLA. He is also the chair of the Regional Affairs Council, which oversees the five regional chapters of the NLA. Additionally, he serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. He is a board member of the Foundation of the National Lipid Association, the American Society of Preventive Cardiology (ASPC), and the American Board of Clinical Lipidology. Dr. Underberg is a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology, and a fellow of the NLA, American College of Preventive Medicine, ASPC, and American College of Physicians.
