Philadelphia Nurse Practitioner Becomes National Lipid Association President
Joyce Ross, CRNP, MSN, Assumes Role of President during the 2016 NLA Scientific Sessions in New Orleans
Jacksonville, Florida (May 26, 2016) — Joyce Ross, MSN, ANP, CLS, CRNP, FPCNA, FNLA, assumed her role as president of the National Lipid Association (NLA) during the business meeting held Saturday, May 21, 2016, in conjunction with the 2016 Scientific Sessions in New Orleans.
“We’re no longer in our infancy. We’re teenagers celebrating our 15th anniversary this year, and that’s why we’re disruptive,” said Ross during her opening remarks on Sunday, May 22, 2016. Her chosen theme for the term of her presidency is to be both disrupters and integrators. She wants to build upon the NLA’s accomplishments of recent years, including the two-part NLA Recommendations for Patient-Centered Management of Dyslipidemia that were published in 2014 and 2015. “The guidelines changed us and set us apart as the lipid experts in the world,” said Ross. The NLA is a multidisciplinary organization, and as the new president, Ross hopes to see the organization grow both in membership and affiliation with like-minded organizations to advance knowledge and practice expertise in the field of dyslipidemia.
Ross is a certified registered nurse practitioner, clinical specialist, and clinical lipid specialist formerly practicing at the Cardiovascular Risk Intervention Program at the University of Pennsylvania with Dr. Daniel Rader, where she continues her professional affiliation. She has been active in education, clinical research and has been both a clinical coordinator and sub-investigator on several cardiovascular risk reduction trials for lipids, and other aspects of risk reduction. Ross is published in the fields of preventive cardiology, identification, assessment and treatment of cardiovascular risks, and all aspects of lipidology. She has lectured both nationally and internationally and is frequently a member of advocacy groups. Her undergraduate and graduate work was completed at Gwynedd Mercy College (now University), in Gwynedd Valley, Pa., where she graduated Cum Laude. She holds two master’s degrees, the first as a clinical specialist with subspecialties in gerontology and administration, and the second as an adult nurse practitioner. She has received accreditation as a Clinical Lipid Specialist by the Accreditation Council for Clinical Lipidology in 2007. In 1997, she was the first recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement from the Gwynedd Mercy College.
As past president of the Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association (PCNA) and the Northeast Lipid Association (NELA), Ross has held several leadership positions and served on numerous boards within the NLA and PCNA. She was a founding board and past board member of the Familial Hypercholesterolemia Foundation, Cardiovascular Institute of Philadelphia, and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau.
Other NLA officers for the 2016–2017 term are President Elect James A. Underberg, MD, MS, FNLA; Executive Council Chair Dean A. Bramlet, MD, FNLA; Executive Council Chair Alan S. Brown, MD, FACC, FAHA, FNLA; Executive Council Chair Antonio M. Gotto, MD, DPhil, FNLA; Treasurer/Secretary Harold E. Bays, MD, FNLA; and Immediate Past President Carl E. Orringer, MD, FNLA.
