The NLA Recommendations for Patient-Centered Management of Dyslipidemia was recently published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology. As you know, these Recommendations are a tool for clinicians who treat patients with dyslipidemia — and they should serve as guidance for treatment. A 55-year-old South Asian Indian physician comes to you for management recommendations for primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). He has no current cardiovascular symptoms.
He has an eight-year history of well-controlled arterial hypertension, for which he has been treated with lisinopril 10 mg daily. He is a nonsmoker, has no history of diabetes and has never taken treatment for a lipid disorder. His father had an MI at age 52.

The National Lipid Association (NLA) published recommendations that are designed to help fill the gaps in the 2013 cholesterol guidelines jointly released by two cardiology associations. The report aligns with some aspects of the guidelines but diverges on cholesterol targets.

Expert Panel Re-affirms the Importance of Setting Cholesterol Goals for the Prevention of Heart Attack and Stroke
Increasing obesity is one the most important healthcare problems in United States and has become a major focus of recent government initiatives to improve the health of the country.
The serious effects of obesity are even greater in Indians and other South Asians especially in the case of obesity around the waist. Although, Body Mass index (BMI) is the commonest measure of obesity we now know that a more dangerous type of obesity is “Abdominal Obesity”. “Abdominal”, sometimes called “central”, obesity which is best measured by waist size.
Recent survey shows need for triglyceride testing and improved reporting by health care providers
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (September 2014) — In response to recent survey findings, the National Lipid Association (NLA) announces a nationwide educational campaign to raise awareness within target consumer audiences. Their goal is to encourage patient education and drive discussions around lipid management and the resulting consequences for high cholesterol and triglycerides.
