In this issue of Lipid Spin, several articles and a tear sheet focus on the importance of the physical exam in the evaluation of the patient with lipid disorders. While the physical examination remains the cornerstone of patient evaluation and ongoing treatment, all too often those of us in a teaching role find this a rapidly disappearing art.

(LAS VEGAS, NV) - The National Lipid Association (NLA) installed Matthew K. Ito, PharmD, FCCP, CLS, FNLA, as President at its Annual Scientific Sessions on May 29, 2013. Dr. Ito is Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Director of the Cardiovascular Pharmacodynamics Laboratory at Oregon State University/Oregon Health & Science University, and was a founding member of the Pacific Lipid Association (PLA). Dr. Ito served as the PLA President from 2009-2010.
NLA Recognizes Several Renowned Lipidologists with Lifetime Member Awards at Annual Sessions Award Ceremony
On Friday, May 3, the U.S. FDA approved LIPTRUZET (ezetimibe and atorvastatin) tablets for the treatment of elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in patients with primary or mixed hyperlipidemia as adjunctive therapy to diet when diet alone is not enough. On April 23, Amarin Corp. issued a press release announcing that the U.S. FDA has accepted its Supplemental New Drug Application (sNDA) seeking approval for the marketing and sale of Vascepa (icosapent ethyl) capsules for use as an adjunct to diet in the treatment of adult patients with high triglycerides (TG =200 mg/dL and < 500 mg/dL) with mixed dyslipidemia.
The FDA's review of Vascepa is expected to be completed by December 20, 2013.
The USAGE Campaign, which launched in 2012 as a joint initiative by the NLA, Kowa Pharmaceuticals America and Eli Lilly & Co., recently was honored with finalist designation for two major industry awards, the PRSA National Silver Anvil and the PRSA Big Apple Awards.
