The NLA offers many opportunities for fellows-in-training who are actively enrolled in a graduate or postgraduate training program for the treatment or investigation of lipid disorders and in pursuit of full credentialing in their specialized area of medical study. Including but not limited to, complimentary membership, educational offerings, print materials, online activities and travel grants.

A Successful Path for Trainees Focused on Lipidology

Step 3: Register to attend one of the Lipid Academy Courses and/or Masters in Lipidology Courses
Step 4: Complete the full version of the NLA Self-Assessment Program for CME Credit
Step 5: Apply to the ABCL or ACCL to become certified in Lipidology
Step 6: Get more involved with the NLA, connect with a mentor and prosper in your career!

Fellow/Trainee Membership to NLA

Available to individuals who are actively enrolled in a graduate or postgraduate training program for the treatment or investigation of lipid disorders and in pursuit of full credentialing in their specialized area of medical study. A letter from the program director or the school registrar must accompany the application. Join Now Complimentary!

Fellows Self-Assessment Program

The Fellows Self-Assessment Program is an abbreviated (100 question) version of the National Lipid Association Self-Assessment Program (NLA-SAP) and is complimentary to all fellow-in-training members of the NLA. The NLA-SAP objectively validates and enhances your knowledge of clinical lipidology as well as challenges your problem-solving skills in the diagnosis and management of patients with dyslipidemia. This online program provides real-time feedback after each question, and includes detailed critiques of each item along with bibliographic references. This is a non-CME activity.

Education Opportunities

NLA SAP

Fellows-in-training can complete the entire NLA-SAP at a reduced rate. The NLA-SAP was developed to provide a critical assessment of your knowledge and to guide you in the selection of additional training courses as well as prepare you for certification in clinical lipidology. The modules in this program include:

Module 1: The Science of Clinical Lipidology: Lipid Metabolism, Pathogenesis of Atherosclerosis and Genetic Disorders
Module 2: Cardiovascular Disease Risk Stratification: Identification of Risk Factors and Management of Patients are Cardiometabolic Risk
Module 3: Contemporary Management of Dyslipidemia: Therapeutic Lifestyle Change
Module 4: Contemporary Management of Dyslipidemia: Pharmacologic Therapy
Module 5: Consultative Issues in Clinical Lipidology

The program contains over 500 questions and is available in a web-based format that provides real-time feedback after each question. It is also available as an app in iTunes and Google Play. Each module provides between 18 – 35 hours of CME/CE credit. Fellows can purchase the entire program for $100.

Fellows-in-Training Travel Grants Available

Fellows in training will receive $500 in travel expenses to attend the 2 day Lipid Academy and may also attend the Fall Clinical Lipid Update or Annual Scientific Sessions for free. This benefit is available not just to physicians, but to all health professionals in training who are specializing in lipid management. A completed registration form and a letter of verification from your program director is required. Limited space is available so act now! For more information, please contact Sandra Goode. Lipid Academy Online

Lipid Academy Online is a user-friendly, tech-savvy adaptation of the NLA's live training course. This series of 7 interactive modules provides a comprehensive indoctrination to lipid science and essential information for the systematic management of dyslipidemia and the metabolic syndrome. The one-of-a-kind course covers the core competencies in Lipidology, while preparing you to work more effectively in clinical practice. Registration for Fellows-in-Training who are NLA members is complimentary. Email Sandra Goode if you are interested in registering as a trainee.

ABCL/ACCL Certification

  • Join the ranks of hundreds of health professionals who have achieved certification from the American Board of Clinical Lipidology (ABCL) – the only certification program of its kind available to licensed physicians in the United States or Canada. To view details, click here.
  • The Accreditation Council for Clinical Lipidology (ACCL) is an independent certifying organization that has developed standards and an examination in the field of Clinical Lipidology for the growing number of allied health professionals, primary care and paraprofessionals who are involved in lipid management. ACCL provides recognition and distinction in the field of Clinical Lipidology for those allied health, primary care professionals and paraprofessionals who successfully credential and complete a written examination. Mentor/Mentee Program

The NLA mentoring program was established to help develop the next generation of clinical, academic, and administrative leaders in the field of lipidology by pairing early career members with established members. We hope you will take the time to get involved in this new initiative. ACGME

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is responsible for the Accreditation of post-MD medical training programs within the United States.
